Prenatal Vitamins and Minerals
A friend once told me, “Even if you can’t take anything else, take your prenatals.” I think it is good advice. I get lots of comments about how strong my babies are and I think it has everything to do with the pre/post vitamins and minerals I take. I guess some are better than others. If you do get one that upsets your stomach, switch kinds. There is no “set” formula to make a prenatal vitamin so certain companies’ combinations might not work well with your body.
After getting shaky and somewhat queasy from the kind I bought from GNC, I switched to a brand called Nutri-West. Their supplements are seem to be – to me – superior as they are made of 100% all natural ingredients (with no added dyes or sweeteners) that aids in your body processing the nutrients better. (I take four pre/post natal minerals and two pre/post natal vitamins a day – half in the morning and half at night.) Nutri-West was actually created by my husband’s uncle and cousin, who are well-known and well-respected nutritionists nationwide. If you’re interested in trying this brand they can be found online here.
Whatever you, make sure to get 400 mg of folic acid every day to help prevent up to 70% of serious birth defects in babies (defects particularly of the brain and the spine). You might be surprised to know that many doctors recommend (whenever possible) taking folic acid the couple months before you get pregnant to ensure that it will be present the moment the egg is fertilized.
